This plant is a cascade of three jacketed stirred tank reactors (Volume 5 l) made of glass with a plug flow reactor of 20 m length and 8 mm diameter. All four reactors are heated with warm water with a maximum temperature of 85 °C.
The plant is completely controlled automatically by an industrial control
system. Various configurations are possible.
The flow between the jacketed reactors is by gravity. From the lowest stirred reactor a peristaltic pump feeds the tube reactor.
Two feed liquids are provided in 22 l tanks and pumped with 4 membrane dosing pumps into the either of the 4 reactors. The pumps are automatically controlled.
The product is collected in a 30 l tank and can be removed from any of the 4 reactors.
The heating system has 2 electric heaters with 2 kW each and a circulation pump. Fresh water is used for cooling.
The size of the system is 2150 mm wide, 600 mm deep, 2500 mm high.
Measurements and Controls
The measurements in the plants are basically of temperature and quality. Temperature is measured in the reactors and in the outflows. In the outflow the conductivity is measured for the acid concentration. Inside the reactor the pH value is measured. The liquid is controlled with an adjustable overflow tube.
In the lowest stirred reactor, the liquid level is also determined.
The control of the flows is done by solenoid valves and the pumps. Feed pumps are frequency controlled, the speed of the peristaltic pump is controlled by speed. The heating-cooling system’s liquid is fed to the single reactors using solenoid valves.
Control System
The control system is an industrial Siemens Process Logical Controller (PLC). It has 12 analogue inputs, 2 analogue outputs, 32 digital outputs and 16 digital inputs. The operation system is a standard PC with the visualization software Simatic ProTool/Pro running on it.
